In 1959, Mack designed and built Regent's Park's five homes, a perfect time capsule of that architectural style, a gracious flowering of subtropical neoclassicism, extremely popular in classic Palm Beach, when buyers wanted a more formal look. These homes are easy to reconfigure to today's tastes and standards. Mack, like John Volk and Gottfried had a tremendous influence on the Town's style. This Regency's facade has roofline urns, window shutters and a central portico with columns and triangular pediment. The home is symmetrical w/garages on either side, each with pediment motifs. The foyer has his/hers powder rooms, foyer and gallery floors are marble, spaces graced by archways, and the "rotunda" is skylighted. Wainscoting, decorative molding, detailed millwork and wood floors line the house. Columns separate the LR and loggia. Built-in bookcases and cabinetry flank the working marble fireplace. Big windows overlook pool, patio, Lake and gardens. Marble-appointed bathrooms. Affluent buyers drawn to culture and history seek highly-prized historic homes. Younger buyers also enjoy possessing a crown-jewel with unique stories to tell. Classically-designed older homes are the rage in hot real estate markets, Palm Beach included. This European-feel home w/a taste of formality was designed and built in a gracious time of hosting society galas and grand entertaining. The structure can be restored (interiors updated) to modern-taste ethos while retaining the original character, symmetrical fa+ºade and classical details. Clarence Mack, born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1888 studied Renaissance architecture in Europe before his 1935 arrival to Florida. He previously designed 1920s French-Chateau-style homes in Cleveland's Lakewood, Rocky River and Shaker Heights areas. He combined land developing, design, home construction, interior decorating and landscaping, with elegance and European motifs. He believed interior features had to match exterior architecture. Mack lived in his homes as he built them. His designs were inspired by tradition. He is best known for his grand "Palm Beach Regency" estates built for his wealthy clientele of scions, heirs and moguls. Mack platted Regents Park in May 1958 with five prime lots between S. Ocean Blvd. and the Lake. He purchased the property from Matthew H. and Helen T. McCloskey, Palm Beach winter residents from Philly with close ties to JFK and the Kennedy Family. Construction company owner McCloskey was a U.S. Ambassador to Ireland, Democratic Party fundraiser and part of "Kennedy's Irish Mafia." Town historical records cite the Mack property as "the former Alexander Rutherford" property. Rutherford, who wintered in Palm Beach, belonged to the Everglades Club and was the Town's first Civic Association President in 1944. Mack used a revival interpretation of 19th Century England's Regency style, named for George the IV when he was Prince Regent, drawing from Georgian architecture that preceded it. The style is also associated with interior design and the period's decorative arts. England's Regent's Park is called the "jewel in the crown." Some label Mack's work Neoclassical. Prior to Regents Park (the "colony") Mack built PB homes on Jungle Road, El Vedado, Via Del Mar and S. County Road. He later constructed the 7-house Parc Monceau in 1962. "Who's Who" Irving J. and Jeannette Reuter were 500 Regents Park's first owners, following their lavish Michigan home Medovue Estate (still a tourist destination). Auto-great Reuter was an automotive leader, patent holder and one of General Motors' 10 original investors. The Reuters were often mentioned in the news for entertaining at their Regents Park home and the Everglades Club. The dog- and horse-loving couple also resided in Ashville, NC. The Reuters in 1960 commissioned famed Palm Beach builder Robert W. Gottfried to construct an addition to the dwelling, the west-facing patio 16'8" x 40'8" flat-roof overhang and columns. The Reuter's philanthropic foundation provided an estimated $79,000,000 in 1984-2002 charitable grants, after the couple's passing. Joining the Reuters as original illustrious buyers in Mack's five-house enclave of spec homes were: Washington D.C./Montana residents Arthur and Mary Hill, part of the Palm Beach social set and Coconuts and Palm Beach Red Cross Chapter members; winter resident investment banker and former Ambassador to Ireland George A. and Ethel S. Garrett, also Washingtonians; seasonal resident economist/business and scion of the Chicago Tribune founding family Alfred and Louis Cowles, III, of Chicago, also members of Palm Beach clubs. Architect Clarence Mack himself resided in the sequestered enclave for 20 years. Other extraordinary residents of notable accomplishments and stature have resided at Regents Park throughout the years. Widow Jeannette Reuter sold A. Schaible 500 Regents Park in 1972. Schaible commissioned prominent builder Gottfried to remodel the interior. A year later, she and her husband sold the home to Robert D. L. Gardiner, the last family-name heir to own Gardiner's Island, off the coast of Long Island, for four centuries. Self-anointed "the 16th Lord of the Manor," he had a onetime $135,000,000 net worth. His English settler ancestor Lion Gardiner bought the 3,350-acre island from the Montaukett Indians in 1639 and also obtained a King Charles I of England charter. Captain Kidd once buried treasure on the island and Julia Gardiner was President John Tyler's wife. "The Fords, the du Ponts, the Rockefellers, they are nouveau riches," Gardiner once quipped to a reporter. Gardiner constructed the 500 Regents Park pool in 1973. Gardiner sold Philip and Vera Lukin 500 Regents Park in 1985. Lukin was a longtime NYC advertising executive, business consultant and decorated knight commander Order St. John Jerusalem (Knights of Malta United States). The couple had a vast fortune in family New York real estate. He became The Palm Beach Social Observer's editor/co-publisher and was called the "dean of society columnists" and social sheets. The upper-crust couple frequently socialized in Palm Beach with their friend Estee Lauder. Beloved socialite Vera Racolin Fadiman Cameo Lukin of Beverly Hills and New York was feted for her great beauty, grace and charm. The Lukins in 1985 contracted Palm Beach builder E.B. Walton to draw up plans for a new main kitchen and to construct an overhead second-story staff quarters. The area accessed via stairs off the downstairs kitchen was designed to provide the homeowner with maximum privacy. Widow Vera Lukin and Eddy J. Louis later wed and the couple shared 500 Regents Park. The couple enjoyed the sophisticated Palm Beach lifestyle
